You guys know if you can put a 15x8 American Racing Baja Rim on a 2005 Z71, or will it mess anything up b/c is comes with a 17 inch rim. I just think the smaller the rims, the bigger the mud tire looks, so im gunna try to go with 15 inch rims or maybe 16s. Any advice on whether or not this would be alright for my truck would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The main problem with 15" rim fitting would be the brake calipers not having clearance, A 16" should fit most shops will allow you to do a test fit to make sure there is enough room. Make sure they check both front and rear because the calipers are different sizes. Nick

Skinner, Another thing to be careful of is the offset of the rim. Most newer GM trucks are equipped with a negative or a "0" offset rim from the factory. If you install a rim with positive offset you may have to worry about fender contact(depending on the size of the tire). Dave

Can some one explain in more detail about the off set of a wheel? I under stand about back space the more you have the less you have and vise versa ( in contrast to how much tire and wheel sticks out of the wheel well ), but what is this off set? I would appreciate it if some one would explain in a detail more suitable to where my six year old would under stand as well.

Hi Kevin, You're right to assume that offset and backspacing are in fact two very different things. Here's the basics of each:

Offset is the distance from the Centerline of the wheel to the wheel bolt up face (the part of the wheel that contacts the car's hub when you attach the wheel). Positive or Negative is the descriptive term that tells us whether the wheel bolt up face is farther towards the inner or outer part of the wheel. Defining which side positive or negative means is the part not everyone agrees with.

Backspace is not near as confusing. Backspace is the distance from the edge of the inner rim to the wheel bolt up face.

Here's a good article I found with some pictures: http://www.usacomp.com/Offset.htm

Hope this helps.

Rick

Rick, I have a question about a wheel that I may purchase for my 2000 Z71. The wheel is a Eagle 146 with a back space of 4.5" and a off set of 0. My question is how much wheel and tire will be able to expect to stick out of the wheel well if I purchase these. I'm wanting a little of the wheel to stick out to give the truck a tight appearance, but not to much to throw it off. I was thinking maybe a 1.5" or so, but thought I would ask some one who seems to know this stuff better than me going with my guess. Thanks. Kevin

Kevin, this really depends on two things... 1) What type of truck you currently have 2) What the offset and backspacing is of the stock rim, compared to the new rim.

While this will help you figure out some of the difference, the rest will be based upon the width of the tire. If you're original tire was 10" wide and the new one is 12" wide, you can expect to have the tire stick out about 3/4" or so.
