Great point Snoman - the fuel injection system can't switch between open and closed loop efficiently if the 02 sensor isn't reaching the right temperatures.

Okay without me going back to square one and rereading the whole thread, where are we at? What is it still doing and the state of exhaust system and are O2 sensors actually present or bypassed and what is it still doing as we have been all over the place with this one. |

Try removing plug wires one at a time and find out if it goes away with one of them to localize the problem. |

Okay, I have had a occasional EGR code light on my 89 for about 6 years now on my 89. It is being caused by a small pinhole leak in diaphragm for it. I tried replacing it several years ago but after market did not fit right and I was not going to pay dealer price plus it runs great and gets super MPG for its type so I am not going to worry about it. Mine only comes on sometimes at speed and never in town or during a emissions test when they had them as it always passed them. |

This may be borderline off-topic, but I had an '86 Pontiac in high-school like this. Nothing wrong with the car, but that darned check engine light wouldn't go off. It turned out to be a short circuit that was causing it all along.
P.S. Glad we could help!

Get now I do feel old. My first car was 62 Plymouth and I owned about a half dozen of 60's era cars and trucks. Those things where built like tanks! I friend of mine had a 55 we souped up and ran around in. We beat the snot out of that car for close to a year and never broke it. It had a warmed up 265 V8 with headers and a 4.88 axle with a 4 speed. |

Glad to hear it's working out well for you. I'll keep my eyes peeled for such an animal and will let you know if I come across something.
