Im looking at buying a 79 cj7 that is a quadratrack. I know nothing about the quadratrack. Is it good or bad as opposed to a regular 4 wheel drive? How does it work. Is it cheaper or more expensive to work on?

A quadratrack is full time four wheel drive. It basically works like a differential except ft. to rear. They are getting very hard to find parts for and do take a special fluid. Some people do not like them because the rear drive shaft is off to the side instead of being centered.

You can use straight 30W fluid in the QT case. It is a strong case & really not that hard to work on. You can get a part-time kit for it from MileMarker/others & it will work fine.

on cjoffroad.com there is a nice write up on the t-case, do a search.

P.S. I had a 79'-7 w/a QT & it handled fine, the low range was nice also.

84' CJ8 ()Project Jeep) 86' CJ7 Sold all the rest but getting more.

Yes the Borg Warner Qtrac is a strong unit and trouble free if serviced regularly. I have one in a 79 J20 that I have owneed for nearly 20 years and hauled horse trailers and plowed snow with it for many years too and it is still stock and chain is just reaching wear limit now but it is no slapping or jumping yet. The Tcase when found in bone yard are usually pretty cheap because nobody wants them. I have two complete spare cases too. One stock and one they was recently overhauled and has the mile maker kit in it too. (non OD version) that I plan to use one day in truck when I restore it. Also, you should use non detergent 20 weight oil in in (not 30 and the lack of detergent minimizes foaming in Tcase too) if you do not use Q trac oil but Q trac oil is readily availible on the web for about $5 a quart plus shipping under a different label because jeep never made it to begin with and the original OEM for it still makes it.

But the actual Qtrac fluid is spec'ed as 20 weight with a additive to it. It is noticably lighter in viscosity than 30 weight oil too. Also in cold weather the striaght 30 would not flow well and impeed the operation of the vacum actuator (which is very small and limited in thrust) to enable the lock out of it (or engagement of it if a milemaker kit is installed).

No biggy. I have lived with one for about 20 years now. The Qtrac was a well designed unit and does not heat the oil much and has a very efficent planitary gear set for low range that is pretty quiet and cool running as well if all is up to spec in it.

I picked up a 77 CJ7 with Q/T and I cant get the 4x4 to work. I have no knowlege of this system. I noticed a selector switch with three vac lines but it doesnt specify what is on or off. Also the jeep has lock out hubs that someone put on before I got it. Were do you think I should start with my troubleshooting. The vac lines are pulling vac back to the t-case.

I have a 1978 jeep Wagoneer w/ Quadratrack.  It does not seem to be transferring power to any wheels except the right rear.  I've checked the vaccum lines and linkages and all seem to be OK.  It does feel like it is shifting into 4 whell ok but again.. no power.  Anyone with any suggestion?
