Oh superior gods of Jeep wisdom please help this lowly person that is having problems again.  I guess that’s what comes with owning a 92 Jeep....

Anyway last week I was having issues keeping it running.  It turned over with no problem but died soon after.  I started it again with no problem but again it died.  It probably died about 4 times in about 10 minutes and each time it started with no issue.  After I parked and it rested a few minutes it turned over and ran with no issues.  After speaking with the mechanic neighbor he said that we had ick in the fuel filter and needed to change it.  So we changed out the fuel filter, put some premium fuel in it and ran it up and down the highway with no issues.  Problem fixed?  Today I ran a few errands had no issues starting it, went from place to place with no problems but after I cut the Jeep off it wouldn’t start.  The first couple of times there was no power coming in what so ever.  No buzzing from the door being open, no radio etc..., I let it set for a few minutes and tried again.  This time there was power but it still wouldn’t start.  After letting it set for a few minutes and trying again same thing, it would go from no power to things running but not starting.  Finally we decided to go ahead and jump it off.  Once we got the cables out and the hoods popped, there was a small flash over the battery and it started with no problem.  Notice I didn’t say the cables were attached.  So superior gods of Jeep repair, can you once again offer some suggestions to what this might be?  Might it be something to do with the little squealing noise that comes from under the hood?  It’s beginning to sound like I have a family of old crickets under the hood, it’s not that loud.  Chirp, chirp....

Hey Hobbes - haven't heard from you in a while - hope all is well.

Question... you said that there was a "flash" over the batter. What do you mean by that?

Couple thoughts here...
1) Have you had your battery tested? Most any auto parts store will put in on the computer free of charge. It could have a dead cell in it.
2) Are the battery cables tight and free of corrosion?

Chirp chirp is probably just a fan belt that needs tightening or replacing. It *could* be bad bearings in the alternator, but doubtful. See if your fan belt is very shiney black on the inside and/or has cracks in it(the part that touches the pullies). If so, it probably needs to be swapped out for a new one.

Hi:

So the problem resolved it self for a while and now it's back. We replaced the battery so it's brand new. All the buzzers, lights and everything else works but the Jeep will not turn over. Also there is no reading on the battery gauge, it doesn't even flicker. The Jeep turned over once and after that nothing. It will not start even though all the other stuff is on. Turning everything off doesn't make any difference. And yes the cables are tight and free of ick.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Stranded Hobbes

Could be the ignition switch too... You may want to check that you have 12 volts being sent to the starter wire that goes to the starter solenoid when the key is turned to the "start" position. First, disconnect that wire from the starter though. :) If you have 12 volts going to the starter at the end of that wire, it's likely the starter that's gone bad. If you don't, I'd check the fuse block and the ignition switch.

If you do have 12 V going to it, you may have another problem that's cooking your starters (like a bad ground). For what it's worth, on older vehicles, I run a think braided ground strap from the body to the engine, and from the engine to the frame, to make sure that everything receives a clean ground. This has helped me deal with several electrical gremlins.

starter puling on all the wires in the ignition bay probably towards the driver side fender. I cant remember but there is a fuseible link over there that can go bad it should come from out of the ignitioin switch down to the starter solenoid to control the function of the starter. I still think starter thought espically if it was from autzone or something that is similair in part quality napa is the only way to go for good parts.
