I have a 91 Wrangler with the 2.4 in it. My buddy just gave me a rebuilt 4.2L. its a 85 or 86 and i think it came out of a CJ. will it bolt up right to my tranny and will there be anything else that i will need to do to get this engine in. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me. dan

I don't think the CJ uses the same transmission as the later jeep models so I can't help with any advice on that.

The engine mounts on the 91 are welded on the frame. The mounts on a 6 cylinder won't line up with the 4 cylinder frame mount so you'll have to move them forward and weld them in.

Good luck with your conversion.

I would not recommend this coversion you would be going from fuel injection to a carb. I would sell that motor on Ebay and buy the Jeep 4.0l that is also fuel injected. The coversion does require rewelding the the motor mounts and a 6 cylinder transmission.

I hope this helps.

Actually, Stagewest is right - unless that engine was modified with an aftermarket fuel injection system.

The L6 series, 258 c.i., 4.2L engine was offered from 1971 to 1990. No models of this engine ever came with fuel injection, but the '89 and '90 model engines offered in the YJ's had a computer controlled Carter BBD.

I am mechanically inclined but i have no idea what to look for. the guy told me that it came out of a 85 or 86. I have the intake manifold for it plus the injectors that mount right up so it might of been modified you think? any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you saying it's a multi-port fuel injection? Or do you have 1 or 2 injectors that go to the throttle body?

well - you either have a multi-port fueld injection system that I've never heard of (doesn't mean it doesn't exist though), or you have a different engine. I can't find reference to any aftermarket fuel injection system that had a multiport setup for the 258. That would require a new head, intake manifold, and likely an exhaust manifold too.

The only Jeep I6 engine that ever had multi-port injection was the 4.0L, which was offered in the XJ, YJ, TJ and ZJ. Is there any chance that you might have a 4.0L?

rick@4x4review.com is the email address.

Or - click on "reply to topic" above the area where you normally type. Then you can click on the "Insert an image" link that has a paperclip to it. It might be better to upload the file here, so others can see too.

Or - email it to me and I'll post it. whatever works best for you.

Boy - as far as I can tell, that's a 4.0L (242 c.i.) intake manifold.

Here's a picture of a 258 intake, which looks considerably different.

Yeah, I did some more digging and found info pertaining to the Hesco MPI Kit.

Apparently Hesco came up with a kit called the Mopar Performance Jeep 4.2 Liter Multiport Fuel-Injection Kit. The kit supposedly included everything you would need to convert a 258 c.i. engine (auto or manual tranny agnostic) carb'd engine into a 4.2L multi-port setup. The kit primarily used Mopar OE and performance parts and could be installed by the 'do-it-yourselfer'.

Apparently the kit cost about $2,000 or more and took the average shade-tree mechanic at least 15-20 hours to install.

I guess now we can get back to your question of "Will it bolt up right to my tranny and will there be anything else that i will need to do to get this engine in?"

Stagewest or someone else will have to answer that, my knowledge of Jeep tranny's pales in comparisons to some of the really smart folks on these boards.

I've seen the 4 cyl. trans (ax5) put behind the 6 cyl. but I don't remember how we did it. I should be able to find out by tomorrow and let you know. Normally what we do in this case is use a 6 cyl. trans (ax15) and change the input shaft on the transfer case.

Ok, forget what I said about the 4cyl trans. going on a 6 cly... it's not worth the effort. The way to do it would be to get an ax15 transmission and use your transfer case but you will still need to change the input shaft on your transfer case.

While looking for a tranny, I came across a problem. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the wrangler 4.2 and the cj 4.2.

thanks ECKO I looked more into also. im debating what im going to do. My engine is fine that I have I just wanted more power and torque. Its just a upgrade from what i have. just like every jeeper wants to do. I found a AX-15 for $900 with a one year warranty. So im debating putting a new engine and tranny for less than $1300 I think its what i should do, but im in no hurry. It is seeming to be more of a headache than any if you know what I mean. If I decide to do it I will let you all know how it goes.

Another question i found a t176 out of a CJ with a HILUX or something transfer case on it for 200 obo. the guy doesn't know how many miles are on it but he said it ran when he started to part it out his jeep. Good or Bad decision.

That's not a bad deal but whatever the transfer case is it won't work on your Wrangler. The front drive shaft would be on the wrong side.
