| I've got two 2.5L Cherokees, and though I don't have to do it too often, I hate having to undo bolts on the alternator just to loosen/tighten the serpentine belt. Has anyone heard of a kit to put a tensioner on this engine? I haven't looked at the late model 2.5L engines (I believe Chrysler also put it into the Dakota for a while) to see what they did, but I thought I'd drop this question in here also. Thanks, Marty |

Look under the Power steering pump (below and to the side). There is a bolt facing toward the wheel well, it is a tension adjuster. Have to loosen the mounts just a bit, then tighten the tensioner till belt has correct defelction. This is on serpentine belt set up. Good Luck.

I don't know what year or engine you're talking about, but there certainly is no such animal on either 84 or 85 Jeep 2.5L, since the pump has a solid bracket.
The question is asking if anyone with a late model 2.5L has a spring tensioner for the serp belt that many other newer engines have (like my 5.2L Grand Cherokee). If no one has this or Jeep never put such a thing on the engine, this sounds like a good product to make a kit of. I've already seen a couple of places where something like this could be mounted without regard for body style and without changing the belt size. It would only need to be figured for which way to apply the tension (in or out)and what kind of pulley for that direction (grooved or not).
Such a kit would also allow for a much better solid bracket for the alternator also. When I bought my first XJ, I had a problem of throwing the belt from time to time. I eventually had to bend out the bolt hole areas of the alt bracket and double up on washers/lock washers to keep it from loosening up. Never had the problem again. I passed this to a few other folks I've met over the years with the same problem and a couple of them let me know that it was the fix for them also.
