my 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L inline 6 has been misfiring, bad idle, hesitates when accelerating for the past 3 weeks. I have replaced plugs, wires, rotor, dist-cap, fuel filter and fuel pump. was receiving a code 12. After replacing all these parts, the engine would start and run ruff. Now it wont start at all, i replaced the whole distributor which includes a new Cam shaft position sensor. I got the car started and now it wont start anymore. there is fuel in the system and also spark. I still have a code 12. Any help would be appreciated. thx

Tom, My girlfriends jeep wrangler was having the same type of a problem.. I didn't check any of the codes but it was starting sometimes after a long time cranking and then it just stopped starting all togather. I sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body and held it open while she started it then i sprayed more into it while it was running and it has been running fine ever since...No hesitations when taking off or shifting. It's worth a try, it only costs about 3 bucks ------------ Tom D.N. at 6/20/2003 12:13:48 PM

Tom, if the engine still turns but wont ignite it's probably the "crank position sensor" moiunted at the top of the bell housing. It's a bitch to replace unless you have small hands (my wife helped) but only takes two bolts. I got one from napa for $35. good luck ------------ Tom D.N. at 6/20/2003 12:13:48 PM

Tom,

Don't know if this will help. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L inline 6. It has been steadily getting harder and harder to start as the months went by. Today the mechanic said that it was the fuel pump. He said that the fuel pump wasn't suppling enough pressure. We'll see if that fixes the problem since they are fixing it today.

The way it would start would be to crank it for 4-6 seconds, turn off key, try again, then it would start within 3 seconds.

James

Re code 12...Remove the fuel injector rack clean all injectors and the tube...my wifes 4 cyl did this and the problem was in a clogged injector rail and also the #4 injector was very dirty...I cleaned them all with care and b12 carb cleaner...do the throttle body intake area too....have somebody hold the gas plddel down while you spray it ------------ Tom D.N. at 6/20/2003 12:13:48 PM

code 12-

i believe a code 12 means that the battery has been diconnected within the last 50 starts.

but, it sounds like your crank position sensor, this happened to 2 of my buddies, mine is starting to go out in my xj (running like crap and stalling whenever it wants) but thank god its giving me a warning before the jeep leaves me stranded, which is what happened to one of my buddies. ------------ Rich at 9/30/2003 8:22:02 AM
