Hello
I have a '93 Grand Cherokee that has trouble starting. The engine cranks with no problem but she just won't start and run. Usually takes 4-5 trys then she'll start the runs rough for a few minutes then smooths out. I've noticed in the last few days that the "Check Engine" light doesn't come on all the time when I turn the key as part of the normal start up sequence. The other lights come on (ABS, Seat Belt Indicator, Parking BraKe etc) then go off. When the "Check Engine" light comes on with the others she starts up just fine, still runs a little rough but not to bad.
Told by the dealer that the electronic control unit probably needs to be replaced but they want $500 for the job. Anything I can check? Is the ECU something that easily replaced? What do these cost? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

HI!
The samething kept happening to me. I saw my mechanic and he diagnosed a faulty Crank Sensor. This solved the problem and everything has been perfect since the repair. The engine used to never start and sometimes would even die when on the road.

I had the same exact problem, and it was the ECU. Went to MOPAR web site and bought a factory warantied high performane ECU for jus under 300 dollars, and you can send in your old ECU for 100 dollar rebate. Questions? My email is redwiking@iwon.com
