| This condition only happens when braking and when you are almost completely stopped. Only does it on the passenger side. Did the brakes with new drums in December and all was OK till about a month ago. Used a rubber hose as a stethoscope and noise can be described as either "click, click, click" or "thumpt, thumpt, thumpt" and is hear loudest from the differential tube between the rear and the brakes and if the sound was coming directly from the rear end housing, I would swear it would be a broken tooth on the rear gear - but noise only happens when brakes are applied, and like said previously, the sound starts just prior to being almost stopped. The slower you go, the more noticeable the noise. No sound when car is running or while braking to a stop in reverse. Bled brakes a wk ago and sound seem to have stopped - sound came back and bled brakes yesterday with no effect. Pulled the drum and everthing appears OK Any clues? Put new wheel cylinders in an noise stopped for a day or two. Put new rear end lube in (with limited slip additive) and no change. Vehicle is a '96 Cherokee with 40K miles. |

| Having the same problem. Cluncking sound in rear when braking slowly. Had it back to the dealer 4 times. Each time, no help. Had new drums and new brake pads put on. Went away for about a week and the noise came back. Seems like this has been noted in several other jeeps. Anyone ever find a cure for this? |

Check for rear brake drums being out of round which causes the brake hardware to move around a bit when braking as it follows the warpage of the drum causing the noise. |
