During tight left turns my sons TJ will lift the left front tire and it feels like the right rear suspension drops. You would swear the left front tire came off the ground. Especially while accelerating at the same time. The rear axle is a 9" Currie with a D-locker. Is this a normal TJ characteristic, or is something not right. Help!

Yes this is normal since you have a rear locker.

Yes this is why I do not recommand locker for street use and especailly in short wheelbase vehicles. It can cause some squirrely handling at times as it tries to skid the front end under power ina tight turn because a locker cannot power both wheel at different speeds in a turn

Thanks for the prompt replies. I think I will have him save some money for a selectable locker to replace it. He really loves the way it off roads so I think he will still want a locker. Any suggestions for a selectable locker? The Currie tag number shows it is a high pinion with 4.11 gears.

This is exaggerated with overly soft suspensions as well. While this can happen with normal suspension, it's not nearly as dramatic.

Some rockcrawler rigs with super flexy, super soft suspension can in fact lift their front inside tire completely off the ground just by making a tight turn and gassing it.

We've been running the TracTech (Detroit) eLocker in one of our project vehicles, an FJ40 with a Fuel injected small-block in it. We've got it in the front axle, but we've been abusing the hell out of it and it's worked awesome! http://www.4x4review.com/products/drive_train/electrac.asp

It's a tru-trac setup all of the time (kind of like a posi-traction, but better), but you can also flip a switch and make it a full locker as well.

Something else to consider.

I would suggest the True Trac E locker too. It is a lot easier to keep a electric wire intact between axle and frame than a air hose or a cable.

Amen!

And it's a lot easier to fix on the trail... easy to splice power if you need it, or you can bolt in the "lock in / lock out" plate within 5 minutes too.

Lastly - it's a helluva lot easier on the axle components too.
