i own a 1988 Jeep Wranger and i have a question about the Fuel Gauge.

my problem/question is that when my jeep is running the gauge goes straight to full and when the jeep is shutdown the gauge goes straight to empty and when the jeep is running the gauge doesnot move from full??

what could the problem be??

Most likely the sending unit in tank or possibly the wireing for it but not too likely.

Sending units and gauges are incredibly simple devices, in that the guage simply reads the difference of voltage coming back from the sending unit as the float arm rides up the rheostat. That said, there are likely only two things wrong (considering that you haven't mucked with the wiring under the dash at all, or anywhere else for that matter).

The sending unit has given up the ghost... the rheostat is no longer proving ohms throughout its arc, and its now simply "shorting" itself out. This would cause the gauge to move to full, since the gauges in Jeep Wrangler work on a positive electrical circuit. Some guages work from ground and read just the opposite.

The gauge is receiving a full 12 volts from another source, or has become damaged.

To check this, simply pull the connector from the back of the gauge (it should have two wires going into a coupled, rubber boot), and put a multitmeter on it. Check the readings and compare them to a service manual. If the readings are off, then the culprit should be the sending unit.

Need to be a bit carefull here because if you have a cheap low impedance meter, it could overload and damage gage because it operates at very low current. I do not think it is meter though because it changes reading from on to off which points to wiring or sending unit.
