| rick, its a 97 tj. dropping it off at a local shop to have them adjust it. sorry, should have mentioned the year. thanks
UNRELATED to the steering wheel, i had to replace the starter, used a reman replacement after an off the shelf a/m one failed to work properly. it was to tight and you definitely heard it on start up. the reman is doing the same thing, not quite a grinding noise but a whining/whistle noise. there does not seem to be a means of adjustment, do i have to use shims ? the factory starter had no shims. any suggestions ?

I've not changed out a starter on that particular year/model, but I'm pretty darned sure that you can adjust them with shims - you can get a shim pack (usually they come with them) at your autoparts store for about $0.50 (why the heck isn't there a "cent" key on the keyboard???)
You can check to see if that's the problem by pulling the existing starter and check the bendix gears on the starter. If they're already showing wear, then it's likely too tight against the ring gear.
