i saw an add 4 a 4 wheel steering truck on tv a few years back and i was wondering is there an older 4x4 4 wheelsteering truck or suv out there that is 4 wheelable? i think it was the denali that had 4 wheel steering and i thought if i could use that in the mud, i would have a considerable advantage over many people. is it easy to do a 4 wheel steering conversion?

Hi Fearlife - there have been a few OE 4-wheel steering trucks over the years, but most were for industrial, military or agricultural purposes, and many of those were sold overseas. The Denali SUV and pickup was the first (that I'm aware of) consumer production 4WS vehicle offered to the general public that I'm aware of.

Using an OE application for mud drags / mud bogs like the Denali's setup would do you more harm than good, as the 4WS system for the Denali's isn't made for that type of application. The 4WS system in these vehicle are speed sensitive and the steering rates change. It's also electrical/mechanically controlled and wouldn't stand up to the abuse mud bogs / mud drags would through at it.

So, that leaves us with your last questions regarding a conversion... Doing a 4WS conversion on a vehicle isn't all that difficult, provided you have the fabrication experience, the tools, the axle and the money. There are several kits that can be purchased to help with this, but you have to understand that while it isn't rocket science, it isn't kids play either, and you'll need to factor in reverse caster, steering geometry, hydraulics and more. In short, it can and has been done (particularly in the rock crawling arenas) quite a bit, but it's not as simple as lifting a vehicle either.

Regards, Rick

If you plan to play in mud you want to keep it simple with no rear steering as there is less to go wrong and if you are really serious about mud you might look for a old closed knuckle front axle for you front end that was used used in a lot of trucks up to about 1970 because that keeps mud and water out of front axle and bearing a lot better when in proper order.

Yup... in the very early 70's (I think 70-73) there was a closed-knuckle Dana 60 that was available. The didn't stick around long because they were a little weaker than people suspected, and the outter knuckle seals tended to leak (I think they were made of felt) a bit too. But if you look hard enough, it's a great axle to have for slingin' hash.

i found the jeep i need, my dream jeep, i am not sure it is gonna be avialable for the public, but i might just buy the concept. it have 2 hemi engines, 0 turning radius, already off road equipped, hell the only thing it diddnt have was a snorkel. 5 speed automatic trany, a weird ass transfer case. but over all everything i want here is a link to it. http://www.jeep-hurricane.com/Jeep-Hurricane-Concept.php

We got to see it up close when we were in Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari. I was talking with one of the marketing guys and I *think* he said something to the effect of - it was the most expensive single concept car in Chrysler's history.

It's an engineering marvel, that's for sure.
