I replaced the ceramic resistor because it was broken but with out the resistor in and the leads not attached my 1990 cherokee started but would not stay running so I doubt it would keep the jeep from starting, I also replaced the Ignition Module and coil and it has started okay, NOT TO SAY THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM but for now it did. I have never found the TDC sensor and the manual only mentions Top Dead center in the text of the engine not as an actual sensor, is it called something else, all the answers I have gotten as to where it is, still can not locate it. it is not listed in the diagrams. Thanks to those that have tried to tell me where it is. Is it on the left or right side of the engine and is it near the fan housing??? This problem started just this last year and I have had it since 1990 and has 185,000 miles on it, forget the dealerthey never did solve it and cost me 1800.00. not no more from here on in I do it.

I suspect it was the ignition module all along. It was weak and changing the resistor gave it a little more fire to work with because resistors tend to increase in resistance with age and drop more voltage. I am not sure if a 90 actually used a crank position sensor but if it did it should be in the bellhousing area or on the side on the passenger side of block.

You can get one at your local autoparts store. They're not expensive, and you can see how much they cost by going to www.autozone.com, www.checkerauto.com, www.oreillyauto.com, etc - and look up your yr/mk/model for that part.

They run about $125 - $150 U.S. dollars for a replacement Ignition Module. An aftermarket performance unit (Accel, etc.) will run about $300 U.S.

Hope that helps.

My problem: 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0 Liter engine. The engine began failing and eventually wouldn't run more than 4 MPH. Towed it home and replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, and tonight, the Crank Position Sensor. Now, it won't start and it's blowing out unburned fuel out of the throttle body; can't get it to run. It's acting like the timing is off because it is cranking, and it wants to start (very roughly), but it won't. Checked fuel pressure, and it's about 45 psi, cranking. Looked at the rotor, filed it slightly, to no avail. Pulled a plug wire and it's getting spark. I'm stumped, and we're really trying to get to the problem before Thursday; my son needs the Jeep to get to Laughlin, NV for a race desert race. My head hurts as bad as the car not running. My thinking is that it could be the Powertrain Computer (probably needing a bank loan for that). Any hopefully smarter ideas?

Thanks,

Rocketdoc

Hi Rocketdoc - my first inclination is that you've jumped a tooth on the timing chain, and the timing is waaaay far off (hence the backfiring through the carb). You can rotate the number 1 piston to TDC, then pull the cap off and make sure it's still aligned with the #1 spark plug wire - at least that's an easy check.
