| Hey rick. The reason is Im tired of dealing with the problems of all the electronics on this engine. The jeep runs great when its running. I would like to make the jeep reliable for my wife so she doesnt get stuck again. The only thing stoping the motor from running right is the sensors. computer, ect. If you have any advice on this matter I could use it. Thanks. |

Fair enough. :)
Swapping to carb is relatively simple. You'll need a new intake manifold, a low-press fuel pump, an inline fuel fileter (before the carb), a new air cleaner housing. You'll have a bunch of wires that you won't need anymore, but you had better not just clip them off. You can wrap the heck out of them with electrical tape and tuck them out of the way.
You may however, end up with a 'check engine' light staying on though, since the computer will be looking for output from a series of sensors (e.g. O2 sensor, MAP, MAF, etc.).
In all honesty, this probably isn't the way to go. The 4.0L engine is a real trooper. They're very reliable, make good power, and the fuel injection system is rock solid.
I know I'm arm-chair quarterbacking a bit, and I don't know what you've gone though, but I strongly suggest getting the motor running right with the fuel injection in place. I think you'll end up with a nightmare on your hands if and when you go to sell the truck, or trade it in.
At least that's my .02 cents. ;)

Also... mid and late 80's Jeep YJ's had a 4.0L carb'd engine. You may want to scavenge the junk yards and pick the parts you need from there.

| Thanks for the info Rick. So do I have to do anything to the distributor, ignition, coil, ect ? The reason i ask is because the problem with the jeep is that something is making it stall and then it will not start again for a while. I had a diagnostic ran on it and they could not find anything. The mechanic said he cant fix it till it does it all the time. I don't have that kinda time or money. So i figured i could make it reliable by doing this. The fuel injection works great. Something is shutting down the spark or killing power to the engine i don't know what else to do... |

The distributor, ignition and coil can remain the same. I recently had to put a carb on a 5.7L Chevy motor that we built, as we were having problems with the motor, and had to rule-out the fuel injection. For us, I put in a bypass valve / pressure regulator, a new manifold, and a new carb. Everything else stayed the same, I just left all of the computer wires laying loose. Again, this was a temporary thing for this project we were working on for the magazine.
I did have to fabricate a new throttle linkage assembly, as the throttle cable was set up for fuel injection. You might run into a similar problem.
However - regarding your stalling problem. Have you replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump in your Jeep? This is a relatively common problem, and can cause exactly what you're describing. You may also want to check another mechanic before you give up all hope.
