There are a couple of things this could be. The good news is that both are very simple fixes.

On one hand it could be is the solenoid. Based on your description I would doubt that this is the case. Normally when a solenoid goes it either doesnt do anything when you turn the key or it makes a funny clicking noise.

I would guess that it is more likely that the starter itself is bad. It could be that the pinion gear is not moving onto the flywheel. This would result and a somewhat normal sounding starter sound but no starting.

The starter on that vehicle should be very easy to replace and not very expensive.

The worst case scenario would be a busted tooth on the flywheel. Whenever this tooth on the flywheel was aligned with the starter the starter would just spin and spin and the engine wouldnt start. Let's hope this isnt the problem. Start with the starter.

If the starter is spinning, but the engine is not, then it can only be two things.

1) The Bendix has gone out on the starter (that's the part that pushed the gear outward, before it starts spinning). That's most likely the problem. Just pull the starter and get a replacement - easy to do.

2) It could be that you've sheered a few teeth off of your ring gear. Less likely the problem, and also a MUCH more difficult fix (requires pulling the transmission).

Hope that helps. Let us know what it was!

surely to test this no.2 theory mr webby4x4, could you not put the car in 1st and rock it back and forth, there by moving the transmission around slightly? then try and start it? if it does the same thing its the starter, if it then starts then its missing a couple of its flywheel teeth?

Only if it's a manual transmission. If it's an automatic, that wouldn't work.
