| i have heard of this problem once before and seen it first hand. if you do an after market distributor say from maybe autozone this is where this particular one was from there not rebuilt right and they just eat the cam gears up. |

If it's eating the gear after 50 miles, then the distributor is likely not fully seated against the engine block. Either that, or the cam gear is booger up quite badly, and that's causing the distributor gear to wear down prematurely.
