if you didn't get it shut off before the water entered the combustion chamber, or you tried to start it while there was still water in the chamber, then there may be some very serious engine damage. or, if the drivetrain control module "computer" wasn't sealed well, water may have entered it and fried it, or shorted it out where the connectors are. |

Depends on the year, I know on the TJ it's right above the battery. On the YJ it's right beside the brake booster. |

No, i definately didnt get that wet; in fact i think a tune up will do the trick. however, i think this incident revealed another problem. i know i sucked the water in through the throttle body and yet the water got into my oil. the only thing i can think of aside from a hole in the engine is faulty rings. |

Best way to get water out is to remove all spark plugs and crank it over a few times.
When you get it home (or sooner if you can) change fluids).
Some WD40 on the distributor and (assuming you're ignition module/computer are well sealed) you're good to go. May run a bit rough at first though.

I've swamped at least 3 motors in my life and have salvaged all of them. On the trail I've removed the spark plugs and cranked the motor over for several minutes. If you get to it right away you shouldn't have too many problems. I did smoke the computer on one motor on a newer truck once and that sucked (had to be pulled home) but was able to replace it and get back on the road. Definately change the motor oil right away and then change it again after about 5 to 8 hours of use. As long as it doesn't sit too long, you shouldn't have to worry about things rusting (everything is coated with oil inside the motor anyhow). I'll typically add some "top end" lubricant to the fule afterwards (Marvel Mystery Oil) to the gasoline to make sure things get cleaned out and stay lubricated on the top 1/2 of the motor.
Another thing you'll wnat to check is all of the electrical connectors that were at or below the water level when you swamped it. If you don't have the "sealed" type connectors, you'll want to disconnect them and blow them out with dry, compressed air.
Good luck!

Well, if there is water in the oil, it could have entered through a vent. Or, the piston(s) may have a hole in them, that can happen pretty easy with water. If you find a lot of damage, I'm selling the 2.5L out of my TJ for $500, it runs great, and has never sucked up any water... ;) Email me if you are interested. rsdnt_evle@msn.com |
