Wholly cow! Sounds like you got a "It's Friday and I'm ready to hit the bars" truck... or maybe even a "It's Monday and I'm hung-over like hell" truck.

By the way - how do you clean out a muffler?

If you had antifreeze in your muffler and cat, then that means you blew a head gasket and antifreeze leaked into the engine and out the exhaust. While there may be some other way to get antifreeze into your exhaust system, I surely don't know.

I've got the same car. The dealership told us that theres a recall on the car, however Jeep isn't sure how to fix it so theres nothing they can do about it. Apparently the gas boils in the third chamber or cylinder. The car starts really rough and sometimes shuts off. Happens to me all the time in the summer, especially if I make a lot of short stops. I know this sounds rediculous but I don't put in SA gas and that seems to help some. Also, make sure the air conditioner is off before you start the car. As far as the check engine light, the gas cap is really sensitive. I've had that car in so many times for the check engine light and its almost always been the gas cap. According to the dealership it can take up to 40 starts for it to turn off. Good luck.

That's really great information Angela, thanks!

What do you mean by "SA" gas?

I seem to be having the same problem with my 2000 Jeep cherokee. Engine light is on and the codes say it is a mis-fire. Starts up OK but halfway through the warm up its starts to rock & roll to the point of almost stalling. After it is fully warmed up it smooths out somewhat but its still not perfect ... seems to be idling too low. Many mechanics have had their hands on this car but so far none have been able to fix it or even know really what the problem is.

Does any one have any suggestions...this is driving me nuts!
