Hi, I just bought a 1977 Cherokee that has been sitting for the past two years. What problems should I look for? I am planning on replacing all fluids and filters, of course.

First thing to check is the frame in rear of vehicle. The frames are known to weaken from rust and break sometimes in front of rear axle. Inspect this before you put any more money into it. If frame is good and solid then it has no other "real" problem areas the differ from other older vehicles. If it has quadratrac you migh check for a loose chain in Tcase.

One of the first things I would look at is anything rubber under the hood. Hoses, belts, etc.

Also - see if you can figure out why it was sitting for 2 years. Was it broken or just replaced?

Normally yes but old Cherokees have issues with frame in rear in rust belt areas and you need to check this first because if frame is weakend, the rubber under hood does not really matter. I have seen more than one in a bone yard due to frame failure due to rust.

Thanks for the advice. Frame looks OK. I just checked the emissions and it is blowing way high on CO and HC so I will change the rotor and cap and the wires and see where that takes me.

Usually the float in carb needs replacing in those old Jeeps as they go rich when they do.

Well, two days into this vehicle, I now have a wierd problem. It starts OK and idles well but when I accelerate, it dies. Maybe the float is bad, as Snoman says. I will replace that. Could the fuel pump also be bad? Do I need to replace the whole carburetor? It also shifts hard into third gear - what could cause that. Thanks for any advice.

Fuel pump would be my first guess or a leak in fuel line that it letting air in on suction side and limiting fuel flow. Usually it is the pump though. On the shifting start with a fluid and filter change and check vacum modulator on tranny to as it cotrols shift points and firmness based on engine power setting via engine vacum level.

you have emissions on a 77? wow that is too bad. i would change all fluids as sstated do a tune up consisting of the spark pluggs wires if need cap and rotor. check the timing. also maybe pull the carb and clean it up on the internals since after sitting for 2 years it probbibly has varnish build up that is causeing it to operate poorly. a rebuild is a good idea if needed. also if reformace is the direction you want to go then possibly upgrade the carb. Fuel pumps are normally the culprate and cheap and easy to fix. now would be a good time to inspeect the ines rubber and steel to the tank. A collent flush might be a good idea as well. Lastly on the tranny a filter and fluid chane is a good bet but BE WARNED, if the fluid has never been changed then oing so could cause transmisssion failure. good luck sounds like a fun old jeep

If you're in park or neutral and stab the gas pedal, does it die then too? Or, just when you're in gear?

Thanks for all the good advice. At least the fuel pump and float are cheap. Yes, it does stall when I stab the gas pedal. I just have to wait a bit for the money.

Well, wish me luck. My son-in-law rebuilt the carb and I am going to try to drive to work today. It seemed to fix the problem as I drove it around the neighborhood for a while and everything worked.

BTW, outside of local junkyards, any good sources for part out there?

wow good luck with it sounds like it is doing better with the carb re build. as for parts i would think local yards would be your best bet as they will have no shipping and are usually reasonable. also i belive and am not 100% sure on theis that you can use parts off waggonieers and the like. agian i am not 100% on what is swap able. good luck also check out some of the full size jeep forms out there for more info
