Hey Sammy - the 318 can certainly be swapped into your CJ7. You may want to look at the 304 engine though, as this may be a direct bolt-in, depending upon your transmission.
The 258 is a great little motor though and with some TLC will last for more miles than you can imagine. There are a number of upgrades you can do to that motor to get it to produce a fair amount of torque, including, but certainly not limited to:
- Bolt a 232 head onto the block. this raises compression a bit and gives more power.
- Fuel injection kits
- HEI-style distributors from companies like MSD, DUI, Accel and more.
The 258 has been used as a race engine in racing bodies such as Jeep Speed, and they can do some pretty amazing things. I believe that there is even a "stroker" kit available for that motor, but I can't be 100% sure.
I'm not trying to talk you into staying wiht your 258, but certainly want to let you know that they're actually a pretty great little motor.

Yes a 304 will basically bolt right in and has the same bellhousing pattern as a 258. A 304 was even a option in a Jeep then so this would be a real easy swap. (AMC standardized bellhousing pattern on 6's and V8 back then to be the same) I would NOT go the 318 route because nothing is going to match up (AMC/Jeep never used a Dodge engine back then nor until after 1990 and even then not in a Wrangler) If you really want to do a engine swap, forget about 318 and look for a 304 or even a 360 (AMC not Dodge) as again it is a very easy swap.

Maybe a 318 swap is popular with newer Jeep after Jeep was bought by Dodge/Chrysler but it make a LOT more sense to use a AMC motor in a earlier one. Why use a adaptor when there is a good engine style that will bolt right in and once came in it too??? On the tranny. 2.5 has a different bellhousing than a 6 so engines will not swap. ALso AX5 used in 4 bannger has a different bellhousing than a AX15 BUT, you can used bell housing out of a 96 to 98 Dakota with a 4 bangers as it had a AX15 to put a AX15 behind a 4 cyl in a Jeep. Also the NV3550 is a bolt in replacement for AX15 used with 4.0 until 2000 hence the name difference from a NV3500. |

Yes if it has a 6cyl/V8 bellhousing on it. |

It was around 1972 or so that AMC standardized bolt patterns on their engine. Before that time it can be hit of miss. The 258 came out in 71 and likely had the new standard from day one as did 304's and 360's. |
