Hello all,

So I have a 1993 Wrangler YJ with a 5 speed manual transmission. I bought this car last august, and over the last few months I've had an increasing issue with my transmission. This problem occurs at random times and with no specific driving pattern, almost like my transmission has a personality and is messing with me (ok, probably not true).

Ok, the problem: At times, when I'm idling at a stop light, with the clutch fully engaged, brake down, and in first gear, it will lock into first gear and engage. I'll have to press the break harder to stop the car from moving forward and it's very difficult physically to pull out of first gear. Again, the clutch is all the way to the floor. The jeep will vibrate more than it already does in these cases -- it feels as though its struggling.

This problem also occurs when driving, though much less frequently. I'll be in second or third gear and I'll try and engage the clutch for a transition, but it'll resist. I've found that if I take the toe of my foot and pull the clutch out, then re-engage it, the problem is no longer there.

Any thoughts? I hope this was somewhat clear. I live in Brooklyn and have a strong distrust for the mechanics in my neighborhood, so should you have any insight I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, -a

i had a 93 wrangler with a problem that at stop lights the clutch felt like it was losin pressure and the jeep would start to jump forward like starting in gear. there are two possible things that could be the problem.... i would check for a leakin clutch master cylinder(look around piston on firewall) the other could be the clutch slave cylinder. depending on you tranny this could be on the inside of the bellhousing and have to take the tranny out to replace....i would start with the mastercylinder...hope this helps

That's the same advice that I would have given (not that that matters. [:)]). I would suspect that you have a clutch master cylinder leaking down on you. Scray stuff, but not a difficult thing to fix or have fixed. The slave cylinder, as Jeep YJ points out, is a bit more tricky. If you're not the mechanical, do-it-yourself type person, then have a good mechanic fix it.

Great. Thank you guys! Sadly, living in Brooklyn I don't have any sort of facility to do this myself, so I'm gonna need to shop around for a decent, trustworthy mechanic. Should it be a clutch master cylinder leakage, any idea on how much I'll be spending. Basically, I'm looking to have as much information at my disposal so as to limit any ambiguities or run-arounds with the mechanic.

Thanks again for your replies.

A new / reman clutch master cylinder will run you about $60. The labor rate will vary from shop to shop, but guess that it should take about 1 hour to remove, replace and bleed the system. So, if the guy charges $40 per hour (guessing on the high side), you should be in it for about $100. They'll probably mark the price up on the parts (that one way they make money), so it really shouldn't be more than $150 to fix it.

I now have a similar problem. I don't see any leaks around the clutch master cylinder (of course I can't see the slave) but if there was a leak, wouldn't the fluid level of the master cylinder go down?

Thanks!

not to say that you don't know anything lol but did you chech inside the jeep on the firewall to see if it is leakin......that is the most common place for a leak not in the engine bay....and if it is a small leak you may not notice the fluid level droppin but the leak will cause a loss of pressure...let me know if you find anything

For what it's worth, it doesn't have to be leaking for it to go bad. Inside the master cylinder are a series of plunger that look like pistons with rubber cups on them. As they become worn, fluid bypasses these cups and the hydraulic fluid squirts past them and back into the master cylinder reservoir. It's essentially leaking on the inside, and not on the outside. This causes the clutch to start to disengage.
