The factories are not required to put estimated mileage cigures on their trucks anymore which is unfortunate. I have driven a Cummins with an automatic and got upwards of 19 mpg but I tend to have a heavy foot. Diesels do not respond to throttle input like gas engines because they are slow reving engines. The automatic tends to suck up a lot of the engines power until the transmission gets into overdrive and the troque coverter locks up. I would expect that a new Cummins powered truck empty will get you close to 20 mpg on the highway. The one I drove had a 2300 pound cab over camper and still got around 15 which is better than any gas engined truck would get you.
Good luck
Kevin
