Love the truck... but the gas bills are killing me!

I have a 1986 Dodge Ramcharger 4x4, 4spd manual tranny, with a Rochester 4 bbl carb. Anyone done a carb changeout on something like this with any success at getting better mileage. I am getting 10 mpg typical, 12 if I am a good boy. Thought about converting to a fuel injected engine, but the cost would be more than I have in the vehicle now!

I have yet to see a vehicle I would want to replace it with; rather see if I can make this work!

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I own a 1990 Ramcharger with a fuel injected 360. The mileage is the same as yours. A few things that I have done is replace the front hubs with manual ones. That frees up the front axle and places less parasitic horsepower loss on the engine. Another source of power and economy loss is the exhaust "Y" pipe. On mine, the left side exhaust flow ran into the right side almost head on. The design is very bad and causes a lot of back pressure and heat. Opening this up with a better design created about 10-15 more horsepower and about another 10% fuel gain. Go ahead and replace the Cat with a high flow cat and new muffler, I installed a 3-inch Flow master muffler to mine. Add a K&N Filter too. With all of these mods I was able to bring the economy up to about 14 on the highway and it stays about the same around town. I re geared the truck after installing 35's which helped to keep the around town mileage up. If at all possible...a New Venture 5-speed trans will help too. The overdrive gear is a .69:1 or 31% over dirve. That is a great help. Many of these mods are not cheap but well worth it if you want to keep the truck. Good luck.
