hI,
I am experiencing a major problem with my 2000 Durango R/T. On heavy acceleration, the rpms are going into the rev limiter. The truck refuses to shift into second gear unless I let off on the gas. I have gone to two dealerships and they stated this was normal for an R/T because it has the 5.9 liter V8. They state that if the truck shifts into second transmission damage will occur because the engine is so powerful. I personally think they are full of shit. Please advise me if what they are saying is correct. Thank you! |

Actually sounds right. It's probably geared for low-end torque for towing, the rpm's will run a little hi,so they have it set up to delay the 2nd gear shift until you let off the gas a little so it won't rip out 2nd gear while it's reaming. a good solution would be to not accelerate so fast- it is a truck, not a sports car LOL.

Don't feel bad, I have a 98' 5.2L Durango and experienced the same problems. I took it to the "dealer" as I thought the tranny was going out (bought the durango used). They serviced the tranny (new filter, fluid, etc) and it shifts better now but still has the high-rev shift into second. I have talked with a few other D owners and they have the same story, just a manufacturer thing. I know there are kits out there for the tranny to improve shifting into 2nd, but they are about $50.00 to purchase and require work to get them in; you just have to decide if the funny shift is worth the money of fixing it.
Good luck.

Well - The 2000 Durango has a dynamic transmission - there really isn't a second so what would be holding the transmission in specific range - does this only happen when it's cold?

First of all I do apoligize for not responding much sooner between work and a BROKEN computer / Online svc that was for the birds....
anyway I hope late is better then never it might be in the kick down linkage I am not to familiar with the newer stuff but in the pre 92's vehicles usually a kick down adjustment helps

Be careful dude....Chrysler engineers have actually said that the power of the 360 is right at the threshhold of what that tranny can take! I just bought a new Durango...and got the extended warranty. My wife likes it, but I'm a Ford guy, and I do not trust dodge one bit.
