It's been several years since I've worked on a S/B mopar motor, but I'm pretty sure that you do have to pull the tranny on that rear welch plug.

What you need to do in mean time is go to Napa and get you a 7 PSI radiator cap (Stant makes them too) Last thing you want on a old or leaking system is a stock 15 or 16 PSI cap. BTW, when I get a new vehicle I get rid of stock cap right after I get it replace it with a 7 to 9 PSI cap. I run 60/40 or better antifreeze and I have never had a over heating or boil over issue with it even on pikes peak and never had to replace first radiotr hose using them even on 20 plus year old vehicles. Another nice thing is that when you get a leak it is a lot less violent with a 7 PSI cap than a 15 or 16 PSI one.

If the transmission has to be removed to repair freezeplug, how many hours should it take for a good mechanix?I don't have the place or the tools to do it myself.

Hard to say. Depends on condition of vehicle and how easy it comes apart. With a 4x4 it is always harder to do because you have Tcase to deal with too. Could take 3 or 4 hours if all goes well or 8 or more if it does not. At this stage I would try stop leak and a low pressure cap and wait for a bit for warmer weather if it is not leaking bad.

Since it's an '86, this shouldn't be too bad. I would think a good mechanic could put it on a lift, pull the trans back, and R&R the plug in about 4-5 hours.
