I have a 1999 Doge Dakota 4x4: Has anyone experienced losing gear oil via the differential vent, located right next to the radiator cap? i was told that the factory overfills the differential transfer case, and it overflows sometimes. it has a real bad smell, which got all over the engine compartment. I was told that there was no damage though. Anyone out there has comments, similiar experiences, advice?

thanks in advance.

I also have a 99 Dakota 4x4 and put a lift on it which calls for the front diff. to be rotated upward. When it was refilled with gear oil it also leaked all over the engine compartment.I tried re locating the breather tube around the engine comartment with no success and figured something must be creating a venturi like suction. The cure I came up with is a thick piece of foamrubber shoved over the top of the vent tube.Since then I have had no leaks from the tube even on steep angles. ------------ Rick Cohen at 2/7/2000 7:37:14 AM

What exactly is a differential vent and what do they do? Are they located on the front and rear difs? Do all axles have them? I'm just getting into 4wheelin' and I have heard that term a lot for some reason. Thanks. ------------ Chris lousberg at 4/5/2000 6:45:02 PM

The diff vent is to let the oil in the diff to expand, by pushing or sucking air through the vent when it cools. the vents normally have some time of a check valve on them so water. hope that answer Leni's question. 90w oil which is normally used in diffs does stink. that is why rick noticed a bad smell. to check to see if the diff is overfiled. remove the fill plug the level of oil should be even with the bottom of the hole.

thanks for the reply but I'm still not clear on a couple things. What about those check valves, are they waterproof for water crossings? why don't all difs have them, I don't think my late-model chevy 10bolt has one. ------------ Carl at 4/8/2000 5:48:21 PM
