Hey guys, does a 1990 Ramcharger have OBD I?? I am trying to help out a friend, some shop told him that it doesnt have it. But I think otherwise. Especially since it is TBI... not that it means it has to have one, but usually does. I thought at least... Any info???????

yup, it's got OBD I. '89 was the first year for the Ramcharger's to have it, and they have it with all of the engine models. I think '98 was the first year for OBD II.

Thats exactly what I thought. LOL. Some guys at this shop said he didnt have OBD and would have to do "extensive" work to figure out why his vehicle wasnt running. I plugged in my new OBD I and II diagnostics, and VOLIA! It was the MAP sensor. There wasn't "enough" manifold vaccume or pressure according to the computer, and it thought there wasnt enough fuel. So it effectivly flooded itself everytime it was turned on.

1997 was the year that they were mandated to have OBD2 support in detroit vehicles and some had it sooner (GM had a it on a few 95's and most 96's) There is talk of a OBD3 some day and industry is going to CAN protocol on OBD2 by 2008 so if your have a OBD2 scanner that does not support CAN you will likely not be able to use it on 08 and new models.

Thats the information that I had too. My Diagnostics machine does actually support CAN, so I am good to go for awhile. My scanner does all current OBD plus the new CAN stuff. I am making a killing off of it, lol. At a minimal 40 dollars a pop, it is fair to customers and I still make good money off of it.

I have two OBD2 scanners, one that just reads codes and does not support CAN and another that has user upgradeable firmware and does read CAN (and a few others too) and does real time data and graphing on it too and it also has a pass through to hook it up to a PDA or laptop. It is pretty sweet. The graphing function is really nice to find a erratic sensor that may not be coding.
