Hey, any info you have to my problem will be much appreciated.

I own a 1989 Dodge Raider and am having a serious problem with it. When it is cold most of the time (In drive) I give it some gas and it completely dies. Then I have to put it in park, turn the car off, and back on, and then put it back into drive for it to work. It also idles very high sometimes up around 3000 rpm in park and is never below 1000rpm (Usually at 2000rpm). I just took it into the dealership this morning and they were no help. All they did was found corrosion at throttle body connectors and cleaned them out. They also told me they needed to verify the cam timing but was going to cost $200-300.

I honestly have no experience with cars and any input/information you can give would be great.

Thanks, Andrew

I agree - you can do a quick check by tapping into the wires that lead up to the TPS sensor and check for proper voltage. A Chilton / Haynes manual can walk you through it.

Here is an update and a new discovered problem.

I got a haynes manual for my raider and found the adjustment on throttle plate/tps. And seems to be working a lot better and idles around 300rpm at a stopped position. I think i have taken care of that problem now.

New problem: After I adjusted the throttle plate and tps, a few days later I discovered a clanking sound which appears to be coming form the engine(dont know what part). Have done a lot of research on this problem and it seems like the most of these complaints are being answered with flywheel, timing belt, oil pump, and under the valve cover. I dont know which one, or if any apply to my situation because totally different make/model. I have read several raiders having a defect with the timing belt, but unsure of that. I am very upset with the local dealer because it seems to me, that they have know idea what they are doing. So, really dont want them to charge me for them dinkin around with my raider. Trying to fix by myself or at least know what the problem is, so I can tell them what they are suppose to be doing.

Any help please? Thanks, Andrew

Forgot to say some other info that might help...

The clanking sound was low at first and then started picking up a bit. Then one morning on the way to class i started it up, started driving and it was very loud. I could not accelerate a lot. Max was about 25mph and could not accelerate past that. So i turned around parked it and haven't driven it sense. I changed my oil on it that day cause it was low. Turned it on and did not change the clanking sound much. I am pretty sure i didnt throw a rod cause i wouldnt be able to accelerate at all(i think). Maybe i chipped a header? Idk though, cause the sound started way before the acceleration problem.

I am pretty stupid, i know haha. Ran my car out of oil pretty much, but hopefully i didnt do to much damage on my raider.

Help the stupid kid please! Thanks, Andrew

You could have spun a main bearing if the oil got really low. It really could be a myriad of things though... Have you put a long screwdriver up to your ear and placed the tip of the screwdriver on various parts of the engine while it's running? This is a cheap version of the mechanics stethoscope, but it works well. It will help you isolate where the sound is coming from and will help us diagnose the problem.

Also , which motor do you have? The 2.6L or 2.4? I believe you should have the 2.6L motor which would mean you have a carbourated motor, and you have a timing chain not belt. Little more info needed, but I can give you a hand if ya still need it
