Try messing with Ford Explorers 97 5R55Es. Those are not nice. You can make money on the Fords yet you earn it. They had valve body issues and the HEAT shields are on for good reasons.

Do your research on rebuilding the Chrysler unit. Pay ATTENTION to clearances in clutch packs and end play. Usually you just as well order your master kit with thrust bearings and selective snap rings to help get clearances within specs. In your shop- check ALLDATA or a couple of manuals for specifics. Tight packs will burn up again. Do the Trans-Go Jr. shift kit. New bands are a plus and inexpensive since you'll have it torn down anyway.

Trans Go shift kit will have detailed instructions. Drill the rear planetary lube holes even if you have to take the intermediate shaft to your local machine shop. Take the instructions with you so the machine shop will know what to drill. Special drill bits are required!!!

Keep in mind that transmissions are mass produced. There is usually a rush in getting them out the door. Example: 1996 -98 GM front wheel drives; our local recycling plant had to certify crush weight on the semi loads of transmissions sent down from the factory. They had different color tags on them, all the torque convertors, dipsticks fully ready to be installed. I couldn't even buy one bolt!!! Is there any wonder why we have transmission problems? The wife's 01 Olds 4T65E had 42,000 miles on it. Had to rebuild it last year. Heat treated heavy duty parts, torque convertor, rebuild kit and shift kit took care of $700 in parts.

If you have access to chrysler part numbers of the transmission parts you need it makes it much easier in dealing with the parts man. Most are new young people and you can help in doing your own part numbers. Transmission web sites sometimes have break downs of the parts. Good luck.

You and I can build our own better if we take the time to address the problems built in. I recommend Trans Go kits. Order one of Trans Go's instruction manuals and you'll see why. Just finished a carry in from a 91 Dakota 4X4. Find out exactly what the truck will be used for and drill the holes accordingly. Had to do alittle machining of the clutch plate to help get the clearance I needed. Even with the smallest selective snap ring your packs maybe too tight. Now if your end play is too large, you'll have to get the thickest selective snap ring and selective washer available. Always flush coolers and lines and put reman torque in or you'll be circulating dirt back into your new rebuild job. There is nothing like a fine shifting trans.,. I believe in paying attention to details large and small. Do it right the first time and it won't have to be re-done. Web sites like this are very helpful when you have time to research. Enjoy the holidays.
