A broken C-Clip axle on one of our old project rigs meant we had to get creative to get 'er home. High-strength rachet straps were used to strap the tire to the frame and leaf springs so that we could drag and winch it through the soft dirt and sand. Once on the road, we remoed the straps and towed it (slowly), while we bumped and kicked on the tire to keep it seated. An all-day affair in scoarching 110 degree weather in Tucson, AZ.

Moral of the story: C-clip axles suck!

Boy oh boy that was along time ago.....

Long, long ago, in an era long since forgotten, my best friend bought a vintage Land cruiser that was pristine, but hadn't been off road in years. Well rules being rules, we decided to take it out on its maiden voyage just hours after driving it home. Rick drove over to my house to pick me up and load to cooler. While backing up into the driveway, he drove over a small stick I was using to support a newly planted tree and sidewalled a tire! We promptly swapped the spare tire on joked that we were going anyway spare or not! It seems that 15 year old Norseman Tru-tracs aren't quite the tires they used to be! Like I said this cruiser hadn't seen dirt in years. We ventured out into the desert into one of our usual spots and stopped to enjoy the view and a cold beverage. On our return out of the desert, we sidewalled another Tru-trac! Now without a spare we had no choice but to drive 2 miles out of the desert and 5 miles on pavement on a flat tire. Did I mention that rick had 5 stiches in his right wrist from an earlier battle trying to wrestle the hard top off the Land Cruiser? So Rick tried as best he could to drive the Cruiser home one handed and finally gave up and let me have the wheel. We basically turned a 2 hour test drive into an all night afair. A memorable evening!

It was only when my stictches ripped open - [barf2] - and I started bleeding all over my new FJ that I finally let Jody drive the rest of the way.

By the time we made it home, all that was left of that front tire were the steel belts and bits of smoking rubber.

No pictures unfortunately - heck, that was so long ago, it was before 4X4REVIEW.COM. Although, it looked far worse than this picture (think MUCH less rubber, and you'll get the idea):

many moons ago me and a few freinds were out "cruzing" (what else do teenagers do?) when the fuel pump bought the farm. we ended up removing the hood, cutting open a couple of beer cans and siphoning gas from the car to dump down the carb( some one sat on top of the motor dumping gas) to get home. it had to look realy funny seeing that at 3 am.

when in doubt use duct tape

About the worst limp I ever had was not even off road. Back in 1974 I was home of leave from military in a 1972 GMC 4x4 that I had purchased used a few months earlier. It was a rare find with dual factory fuel tanks, 3/4 ton. spicer axles, 4 speed manual, optional HD suspension front and rear riding on factory split rims with 32 inch tires. I had heard a slight squeak from time to time on the 1100 mile trip home but it was not constant and I did not look into it because I just wanted to get home and run around and it was not even to years old with less than 30K miles on it too. after being home for a few days I was cruising down the road into a small town when suddenly the wheel pulled to the right and the right front wheel locked up at about 35 MPH. I got it to the side of the road in a controlled fashion and inspected the problem. The bearing assembly had seized on spindle ( pervious owner had run through some deep water with it and not repacked/checked the bearings) It was a mess and I could not get it apart (bearing was stuck on spindle so I limped it to a nearby chevy dealer with hub still smoking a bit and told them I need it fixed because I had to drive back in a few days. They had it fixed the next day and only charged me 50 bucks too. They were able to salvage spindle and I drove that truck 9 years and 120K miles after that and never had any trouble with it outside of routine inspection and repacking

Gentlemen,

Don't let Webby fool you, he was crying like a teenager in prison about his stiches. I told him to suck it up and get his rig home, it was only after he started bleeding to the point where I thought I was going to start an IV on him that I finally took over and got us home.

i carry a peice of pipe that fits inside of the radiator hose and a couple of hose clamps , when the hose blows, cut and insert the pipe, add water and get back home for a new hose.

when in doubt use duct tape
