The max psi listed on my Pro Comp Xtreme AT's is 50. Should I run on the pavement at 50? Does the load in the vehicle change the PSI and change what PSI I should run at?

I thought that would change if you go to a different size tire due to the different cold and hot specs of the tire itself.

You know it's going to be a good day when you get the milk to cereal ratio correct on the first bowl.

well, what i know you run the tire psi whats on the side of the door. but, when i move up tire size it also depends what rateing it is (load) on my duramax i run 60 psi cold. when you run cold it does not mean the temp. outside. its when the tire has not been driven at all. not even around the block.

if its a dd i would put mine at least 10-15 psi under cold rating. ill get a better smooth ride out of it. if you tow a lot go w/ the cold psi.

if you can go to a cost co. or who ever has nitrogen(sp) to fill up your tires since the air will not expand & keep your tire psi way more accurate.

in 10deg. temp. change you will lose one pound of air w/ normal air.

Hi Joelbra - here's a trick I use for every aftermarket tire I put on any of my vehicles - especially since the psi recommendations are generic and aren't specific to any given vehicle's weight...

Find a nice pad of dry concrete on a sunny day and park your truck. Take a bottle of water and pour some in front of the tires (all 4). Drive forward enough so that it leaves a track of wet tread and then inspect.

What you're going to look for is even distribution of tire tread in the track that it left behind. Always start with the tire overinflated, so that it only tracks just the center of the tread. From there, start lowering pressure in 5 pound increments until you reach a point where the track of tread is even all the way across.

At this point, you will have the optimal tire pressure for your rig's weight.

Rick,

That's a very interesting way to do it -- it makes a lot of sense.

It seems odd that it's so difficult to figure these things out. If I ran the world, I'd have the manufacturers issues a chart where it tells you for each size/model of tire what the PSI should be depending on the weight/load of the vehicle.

I can hear the tire-manufacturer lawyers cringing right now. :)

If I ran the world I would be the only one who had tires. Well a few other would get some, maybe.

I did ask, yesterday and the tire dealer told me that they usually go about 10% less than the max PSI stated on the sidewall. So 45 PSI in my case.

Haha, I have seen our mudpits and sand pit in Alaska where I live eat Dana 44's ALIVE. And I have broken them with a stock motor with stock gears and tires. Hell, I HAVE broken a Dana 60 in the front before too. That was in mud. So whoever says that a Dana 44 is not a tooth pic, has obviously never pulled one apart and compared it to a D60 or better. Check out them tooth pick axles and ring and pinion!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA.
