Truckdriver115,
There are a couple of things you will want to check out...
1. Check the rear drive shaft and see if there is play in the u-joints. You can do this by grabbing the driveshaft and turning it back and forth and pushing and pulling on it. If you feel play by pushing and pulling on it (laterally), then it's likely the u-joints. If you feel play when twisting it, see # 2.
2. Place the vehicle securely on jackstands and place the vehicle in neutral. turn the driveshaft with your hand and see if there is a lot of play or clunking when you turn it back and forth. If you find there is a lot of play, listen carefully to the rear axle pumpkin and see if the sound is coming from that area. If it is, it's likely that the ring & pinion gear are worn, or the spider gears in your differential carrier are bad. If so, you should have it inspected by a qualified service technician. If there is no play or sound from the rear doing this, see # 3.
3. With the vehicle still on jackstands and the tranny in neutral, try turning one tire at a time forward and backward. See if you hear the noise coming from the rear axle, and/or listen for sounds / grinding feelings coming from the rear axle. If so, you should have it inspected by a qualified service technician. If not, see # 4.
4. With the vehicle still on jackstands, put the tranny into park and repeat #3, while listening to the tranny. I sincerely doubt this will be the case, but it's worth a shot while you have it on jackstands. If you do feel / hear problems coming from the tranny at this point, again, seek a qualified service tech.
You might also want to check out a few other items such as loose lug nuts, loose bolts on the drive shaft u-bolts, loose bolts on the u-bolts that hold the axle to the leaf spring and so on. It may be something that simple.

Did that work out, or did you find the problem?
