| I have heard a lot about how expensive the upkeep on a diesel engine is why is it so bad? I thought diesels were supposed to last much longer than gas engines. Which is better to buy? |

New Trucker,
It's true that diesels are much more costly to maintain, but in the long run, it's a better deal. They last much longer and are an overall smarter choice for your car/truck. Hope the info is helpful. Let me know.

its true they last way longer, they are alittle more $ to keep up with, they get better gas mileage though, unless your looking for a mud romper then go for the gas engine

Diesels are best in a working mans truck. He wants the torque it takes to get heavy work done. If there is a weak link then the diesel will find it in the drive line.
Cummins is coming out soon with a new engine for pick-up trucks. They are building up the assembly line now. Columbus, IN., world headquarters plant. Good people to work for. It should be ready in 2009 or 2010. The current 5.9 24 valves had electric lift pump issues. Bad lift pump led to failed injector pump.
International Truck Company builds Power Strokes for Ford.
Power Strokes in Fords have went through several changes. Cam sensors, injector driver modules and lift pumps were common problems. Ask those who own diesels what they like or don't like about their trucks.
GM has their own diesel with Allison automatics. Not sure what common problems they have yet.
Hopefully, more people will weigh in on this one in the future. |

How did we survive without a diesel P/U? And this torque thing is VERY misleading. 600 ft lbs or torque at 1500 RPM is the exact same HP as 300 ft lbs at 3000 RPM. IF some modern gas trucks lack pulling power it is because they are handicapped by axle and gear ratio that are not optimized for their power curve. Run a gas motor with same general axle ratio as a diesel and gas motor will loose because it needs to turn more RPM to make its power. Also I fali to see were a 7000 to 8000 motor option is a viable solution because it will never pay off and then in the case of the new Cummins, there is great question to the logic on needing a 1300 lb motor in a off road P/U when a 600 lb gas motor with proper gearing would do much better. |
