Do you have the automatic locking hubs, or the semi-automatic hubs?

I think they are semi-automatic hubs. There is a switch on the dash and also I have to lock in the front wheels. I do not drive the truck very much and this may have caused it to break. I am hoping it is somthing easy to fix. Thanks for your help.

Sounds overly simple, but double-check to make sure the hubs are unlocked. Then select 2WD on the switch and try rolling the truck backwards while popping it in and out of reverse / neutral. That might allow the tcase actuator to pop it out of low range.

The hubs would not have caused this problem, so don't sweat that. I would suspect however that it might be the tcase actuator.

Here's an excerpt from the owners manual.

Before 4WD Low can be engaged, the vehicle must be brought to a complete stop with the brake pedal depressed and the transmission placed in neutral (or the clutch pedal depressed on manual transmissions).

*******************

Shifting to/from 4L (4WD Low) 1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop

2. Depress the brake transmission in N (Neutral); on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, depress the clutch.

3. Move the 4WD control to the desired position. • If shifting into 4L (4WD Low), wait for the 4X4 LOW light in the instrument cluster to turn on indicating the shift is complete. • If shifting out of 4L (4WD Low), wait for the 4X4 LOW light in the instrument cluster turn turn off indicating the shift is complete.

Note: Some noise may be heard as the system shifts or engages; this is normal.

If this doesn't work, we can then talk about the GEM and ESOF systems.

I want to thank you Rick, it worked. It slipped out of 4 wheel drive after I did what you told me to do. I have decided to drive my truck more often to keep everything moving and maybe I will not have this problem again. Thanks again and have a great day. I will look forward in coming back to this board in the future for valuable information.

I have a ford f-350 4x4 crew cab w/ single axle. When I switch into 4x4 it won't go, but I hear the actuator. Also when it is in auto 4x4 the AC won't work, it switches to defrost. I can get it to go into 4x4 low but is hard to get out. Sounds like some kind of electrical problem. Don't think it is the actuator motor. What do you think? Or anyone else who might help. Thanks

Next time this happens pull stright into some grass or gravel and back up a few feet and it should pop out okay. It sounds like you had a torque bind and if you have big rubber with stock gears it can get really bad sometimes.
