My explorer started acting like it was in 4X4 low when making a turn at low speed (jerking, bucking, etc) even tho it wasn't nor was the light coming on. Took it for repair and they changed the transmission fluid in the transfer case. Said sometimes it beaks down. This seemed to help for about 2 weeks. During these 2 weeks I would put it in 4X4 high and immediately would hear a loud "rubbing" sound. Turned it off and on at intervals and it would make the sound when turned on. Otherwise it seemed ok. Last week I made a sharp turn to park and it started bucking again AND making the sound and now the 4X4 High button has started flashing on and off at intervals. It doesn't do this every time. WHAT'S HAPPENING?! Major or minor?
Thanks for any info-

Angie,
It certainly seems like your Transfer case is engaging, whether you're pushing the button or not, which is NOT normal. Couple of points...

- This sounds like a snake-oil sales pitch to me. Trasfer case fluid can break down, but typically after a 100,000 miles or so. (some sooner, but definately not within 2 years!) Unless you've put a considerable amount of miles on your Explorer, or unless the fluid became contaminated (been offroading a lot, or deep water fording?), there should be no reason for it to be changed, or for that to be the culprit.
I would suspect that the electronic 4-wheel drive shift mechanism is failing and is engaging and disengaging by itself.

- I'd classify this as somewhere between minor and major, but certainly well within a major pain in the butt category. [)]
If you are not comfortable with the service being provided by the dealership you went to, I'd suggest taking it to another dealership and tell them what has been done so far.
Regards,
Rick |
