Hi Solofletch - first off, welcome to the boards!

Does this seem to happen when you're driving in a straight line, or only when you're moving forward and the wheels are turned?

Other questions: 1) When it pops, can you feel it through your steering wheel and/or brake/gas pedals? 2) Is this more of a clicking sound, a popping sound, or a loud thud? 3) Does it go away when you have it locked in 4-wheel drive?

Regards, Rick

Might start by jacking front end up and seeing if wheel bearings are loose or ball stud joints are shot and they are reacting at axle input torque.

Thanks for the welcome. It's just what I've been looking for. I've also got a 75 CJ5 that I'm restoring. It happens whether driving straight or turning but it's worse when turning in either direction and the sound speeds up as I accelerate. No, I don't feel it through the pedal, wheel etc.. Just hear it. It's a popping sound. Like it's turned as far as it can and is snapping back for another turn. It actually doesn't make any noise while in 2 WD. It only does it when the hubs are locked in. (Even if I'm not engaged into 4H or 4L) I can have the hubs locked in and driving in 2WD and it will do this. It's high miles, so I'm wondering if I need to replace some worn out parts.

Thanks in advance Rick for any advice.

Brian

Given the further info. I suspect the ujoint in front drive axle by wheels. While joints themselves are not expensive, they are a pain to get to and change. If you farm it out it is not going to be cheap.

I would guess the same thing... if you turn the wheel all the way to the left or the right, you should be able to inspect the u-joints. There should be enough room to grab the ujoint and try to wiggle it around and see if the ujoint is blown out. I'll bet that's what it is.

It could be a blow hub too, but I would check the ujoints first.

Changing them isn't too bad if you have a hub-nut socket and other appropriate tools (many that you can rent for free at Autozone, OReilly or Checker auto parts). It'll take you about 60 minutes per side (maybe less, if you've done them before), but it's definately doable.

P.S. Shoot us some pictures of the CJ that you're restoring.

Rick
