| A friend of mine has a 97 F@$# F250.(sorry not a f@$# dude) Anyhow, it has IFS, it is a reg cab long bed with no lift or tires(yet). He wants to stick a straight axle underneith, damned good idea. But as he and I have never done this before. I turn to you all. Question #1...can you gut an F350 straight axle and do an across the board swap(including steering no doubt.) and if not, who does conversion kits. part 2... he wants to run 44's, Ego problem I think...So this includes how big of a long travel lift?? Cutting fenders and and sheet metal work is expected. 44x13.50 comes at a cost. Any special tools?? Also I should add that this straight axle conversion would include coil overs up front. I am sure I left things out, so let me have it. Web site info would be just as usefull as personal experience, Thanks very much |

The easest way to do this (and there is no real easy way) is to get a donor truck to swap out the axles and the brakes needed and it would be well worth it because the TTB is a joke. One word of caution the, the SD250 for sure and SD350 may only a Dana 50 in the front with is just a D44 in a slightly heavier housing. If 44's are in his mind, you want at the very least a D60 up front and a D70 would be better still from a SDF450 or 550 |

I concure on the D44 axle / 44" tire combination. That's not good mojo. 44" tires are a whole lot of unsprung weight to be slinging around and you're surely going to break something.
I found a few resources that might provide a little help (to see what other people have done):
1) http://soderblom.net/bronco/tech/D44solid/ - D44 solid axle swap, but good information
2) http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/0/067/article/Installing_A_1978_F150_Straight_Axle_On_A_1995_F150.html - sidebar about solid axle swap
3) http://www.setstr8.com/straightaxle.htm - FabriTech sells a conversion kit
4) http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/archive/index.php/f-29.html - a slew of threads on solid axle conversions
5) http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/cuttysark/574/str8axle.html
All of these will vary a bit since they're different model years, and some are Bronco's, etc. - But, you'll get a good idea of what you're up against.
Hope that helps.

| Thank you yet again for the awsome info. Top notch, this should keep me busy for awhile...but I am sure I will be back for more. I deffinatly wasn't thinking less than Dana 60, and probably 70 at that. He wants to jump the crap out of the thing...(and more than likely roll it, snicker) so I was thinking STOUT! You know awhile back I found a set of complete Rockwells on Ebay for an increadible buy it now price of 1,500, believe it or not. I almost sold my blazer for em', screw what I would put them on. I just wanted to be able to brag...nonetheless I thought twice. |

Myself, I question the need for rockwells sometimes. Not that they are a bad axle but the are over kill sometimes and add a lot of weight and restrictions. A D60 or 70 up front is fairly stout and you could always use after market axles for more strength yet and you would save a lot of weight too. For the rear there are a lot of 14 bolt 10.5 out there or D70's and D80's. THere is also the new AAM 11.5 that GM has been using since 2001 (and Dodge too recently) that is quite stout too. |

| Ohh I completely agree, but its all about just being able to say you have em settin on the side yard awaiting the perfect donor vehicle. I myself am stuffing a D60 in the front of my Blazer and a corporate 14 bolt in the rear. That is plenty for now...maybe... |
