any suggestions for a gas tank sealer, i really don't want to spend almost 300 dollars for a new tank on my truck if i don't have to.

only 1 junk yard within 30 miles and he knows it he charges almost new prices for garbage

Have you looked at replacement polyurethane gas tanks (NOT fuel cells)?

We got one pretty cheaply for our project Land Cruiser and they'll last a lifetime. http://www.4x4review.com/products/body/poly-tank.asp

If you're on a really tight budget, call a few radiator shops. Most can re-weld, re-coat gas tanks. I pached mine a few times and they lasted a few months or so, at best. The radiator shop is the next best solution, in my humble opinion.

i know that back in the dark ages(early 1980's)my dad used some 'jbweld'type stuff on the stationwagon's gas tank, he can't remember what brand it was, it worked good so it prolbly isn't made any more or has cancer causing junk in it

POR-15 is the preferred "internal" gas tank sealant, which is what is used by most radiator shops.

Some of the external patches are a combination of fiberglass cloth and some resin mixture (NOT the type you smoke, unless someone's a real freak), while others are a "stick" that you can rub on the hole.

Permatex makes a kit you can use - http://www.permatex.com/auto/autouc.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=80884

JBWeld will also work, but I've heard it doesn't work if gas is still dripping out of the offending hole. I've heard of people using JBWeld to patch holes and it's lasted for years. (Heck, I used it on a radiator once and didn't replace it for 5 years).

Hope this helps.

Awesome! I wonder if the winter weather will affect it some though? Maybe make it brittle?

Not saying it will or it won't, but more curious than anything else.

to tell you the truth, the truck hasen't made it out for wheeling senice i've owned it, i think i only put in 4wd about 6 times in almost 2 years, once to get off ice and a couple of times to pull stumps and concrete out of yards.

cross your fingers for a "good holding job" this winter

well unfortently, the tank has started to leak a little, park for 24 hours and there's a "wet" spot about a foot in diamanter, don't know if my patch is 'jumping ship' or have a new hole forming, it's a little cold to be laying under the truck right now, so hopefully it don't get too bad before spring!

I kind of figured that would happen. I've not seen a patch last longer than a few months, they just become too brittle.

If you're still on a tight budeget (who isn't?), you can call some radiator shops to see if they repair gas tanks (many don't anymore though).

Or... invest in lots and lots of kitty litter. [)]

the closest radaator shop is a hour away.

found a "auto recycling" (p.c. way of saying junk yard??)place about 20 miles from me who only deals in fords. it's a small place, sells lawn mowers and chain saws, drove past him a zillon times and never noticed it before, i need to see how much for a tank.

Thoughts:

Recycled gas tank: 1) Inspect if closely for damage and rust. Pay particular attention to where the mounting straps touch the tank, AND where the hoses attach to the inlets for rust and damage 2) If you buy a recycled tank, it will be well worth the money to have it serviced at a radiator shop so that they can reapply a new inner liner, as well as remove loose inside rust, debris, etc.

Consider both of these costs to that of a replacement poly gas tank. Sometimes it's cheaper, the same or more, but worth a look nonetheless.

At least that's my two sense. ;)

How would you plumb the vent and return lines?

i think early 87 was the "cut off", i'll have to check the book, i know that 88 had fuel injection

edit:

my book only goes to 86 but you know that there are odd ball combonations from the factory out there.

i know i owned at least 1

1977 ford ltd country squire station wagon, with the 460 4 bbl, parts store said that it didn't exist, so had to look up parts for vans and trucks.

took odd ball starter and fuel pump(more expensive!!)

Gas could freeze in Indiana right now... at least the snot in my nose is freezing when I walk outside!

This sucks! I've got stuff to paint and get ready for the Easter Jeep Safari. Where's the 60 degree weather we had last month?
