I'm finishing up one of my project vehicles and am struggling between what type of transmission to use. I've got a well built 700R4 automatic (good low gear and overdrive) and I've also got dibs on an SM420 manual trans (very tough, with a VERY low first gear).

This is going to be an all-around type rig with some street driving, some trail driving and som rock crawling. I don't do much mudding, so it won't be important to have the motor at full blast.

What is everyone's thoughts to this? For off roading in general, is it better to have a manual or automatic transmission?

I have a 93 YJ with a 5 speed but I would rather gor with an automatic. Less work and more enjoyable when offroad. Just my opion

You can do things the right way or the wrong way. Or you can do it MY way...which is like the wrong way, only much faster. http://www.links4jeeps.com

Have you wheeled both? What would you recommend for someone who's going to be doing some rockcrawling?

I have wheeled both & for the rocks I would go w/the auto, it helps to ease on & off or them & also as a DD it helps in traffic.

Just a thought, RollBar

For rocks and hill climbing and decending I would have to say a stick with deep gears because you can control speed better through engine RPM. For all around driving I would have to say a auto matic with OD and 4.56 to 4.88 gears with big rubber as a good compromise (5..13 if you are running bigger than 36's or have a small engine too)

I agree since driving when hill climbing and descending is rough when parts of the is involve. Automatic also for all around driving
