Question...

What is better? A solid rear axle, or an IFS rear axle? I know in the Jeep world it's better to go with solid axles for at least a dozen reasons.

What little I do know about quads, I've heard that IFS rear axles can cause rollovers / tip-overs to happen more easily and more frequently, particularly if you're riding at a medium pace (or faster) and try to negotiate a turn.

What benefits do IFS have over solid rear axles? I've ridden both a couple of times and never really noticed a difference in comfort. Wouldn't a solid rear axle be tougher and easier to maintain?

What are your thoughts?

Just the opposite Jason. The SRA's are very easy to maintain. But if go with lets say a King Quad versus my 700 Kawasaki Prairie with SRA. The king Quad is way better to ride on then mine. Make sure your machine is set up properly with the correct tires(like radials) and rims with the correct off-set. It will make a difference in the handling of any machine.

Ooops, I meant to say "Wouldn't a solid rear axle be stronger, and easier to maintain than an IFS"?

We need to properly identify the two different types of suspensions out there Jason.

SRA- Solid rear axle versus IRS- Independent rear suspension

Would you say that this is one of the biggest differentiators between quads on the market today?

What I mean is this... As I look at different quads, obviously each have their own unique qualities (some have 3 headlights, some have fuel injection, different motor sizes, so on and so forth). As I compare them, is this one of THE biggest differentiators that I should pay attention to?

I would say that is true if you focus on suspensions.

But today there are so many other nice features that make a quad stand out over others too, like fuel injection. As you add these features, up goes the price, of which is a concern to you, right?

If comfort is your biggest demand right now, you need to focus on the IRS machines.

I knew this was going to be just as complicated as selecting a 4-wheel drive SUV. [zomb]

Thanks for all of your help JPSDiving. I'll probably have more questions as I go look at quads this afternoon.

I would have to say for my money I would pick a solid axle quad. I really think they are more stable at speed.

IRS is really a black art that a lot of manufacturers havent figured out yet.
