Hey folks,

I have a 2005 Honda Rancher and one of the front brakes has a tendency to lock up. Even with light braking pressure on the front brake handle the right front wheel will just lock up.

I know it is no big deal to take it apart and I will be doing that this coming weekend but before I did I wanted to see if anyone else had similar problems or any suggestions.

Try sanding the pads and the rotor surface area (try 160 or 240 grit for this) to break any glazing on them and then take it easy on them for a bit while they reseat.

One other thing you might want to check... Make sure that the left front brake line isn't pinched off or that the front left caliper isn't seized in the open position. If it is, it could be forcing too much fluid to the right side and causing it to lock up too easily.

I would suggest cleaning your calipers. I have found on occasion you can get sand or other crud that will make your caliper hang. Not a big job and one you can do when you check on your brake pads.

Hope that helps some?

look at the front brake pads if the right side pads are thinner than the left you have a hydrulic issue.

Great point Danny - that's a great indicator that the calipers aren't floating properly and could certianly cause similar problems.

If that's the case, you'll need to pull the calipers (no big deal), clean the wee out of the caliper bolts and bolt sleeves, and then put some grease on them. If you're doing a lot of mudding, maybe you can use graphite? I've not tried this, but grease will attract dirt and such, and oil won't last.

What does everyone else think about the graphite deal?

i also think that you can use trailer grease you kndow like the kind they use on trailers for boats that go in to the water. i hear it will last longer.

JPSDiving wins!!!

I cracked open the brakes and it turns out that the seal was damaged and water got into the brakes. The water was accompanied by mamouth amounts of crud and caused rust everywhere.

I cleaned everything up and it seems to be a lot better. It isnt perfect but I think a lot of that will work itself out as I ride.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Thanks Batch, that's what makes these forums so cool. Everybody has great ideas to trouble shoot problems. Down the road it might be Rick asking about an issue, or me or someone else. As a community we can pull together and take care of anything, if we do it as a team. Great to hear you are up and running again!
