All,

I get a lot of questions from readers about what they can do to improve the performance of their machines.

To be painfully honest I am not a big fan of engine modifications. On the trail I believe that unless it is a very high quality modification you are just asking for something else go wrong.

That said - I know that there are a lot of things that can be done to coax a couple of extra ponys out of our machines. What kinds of things have you done? Let me know what you have done and how it has worked out for you.

I put a free-flow air filter on an older quad of mine several years ago. I think it was a "Green" something-or-other manufacturer... Anyhow I noticed a bit more pep in the seat of my pants and I assume my mileage increased too.

I wonder if an aftermarket tail pipe would have the same effect. Both of which wouldn't reduce the engines durability, right?

You have to be careful with exhaust pipes. Too little back pressure can increase the temp of your exhaust valves and cause damage over time.

Also remember that you want to be mindful of the amount of noise you are emitting. Loud pipes may save lives if you are on a Harley but they cost us riding areas!

Great points Mike. You may want to look at a jet kit for the carbs. Combine that with a free-flow air filter, and you get a more powerful air/fuel mixture.

That's the way to approach it fellas. Maybe shim your needles when you are at it too. I wrote a tech tip on, jetting & carb needle shimming. You can pull them off my web site if you want to.
