The Hone-O-Drive is an aftermarket Overdrive unit that mounts in the drivetrain. You might want to see if you can find a model # on the unit so that gears can be matched up as I'm sure they likely had a few different models.

As far as I can tell, Hone-O-Drive went the way of the ghost some time back so finding replacement gears might be pretty tough.

However, if you have the original gears (even if they're badly worn), you can probably have some made up by a good machine shop... just a thought.

Thanks for the reply.Im pretty sure that it is a model 100 but even trying to find anything on the net is difficult.I have no idea it they wer bouth out or if they just went down Titanic style. But i hopefully will find something.

Next issue.Machine shops where i live are really half - ass and fly- by - night.I would be really cautious about haveing someone make a gear.

Then the issue of the tranny.Should i just cap it off with a cone and leave i at a 3speed? Or does anyone know of an aftermarket overdrive for landcruisers. The 2f isnt a bad engine its just pushin 3000rpm and its doin 70 in 3rd.I dont want to blow her and need to rebuild again.if worse comes to worse should i just buy a new 4 or 5 speed from Specter or Man-A-Fre?

thx for everything

I think they went under titanci style, unfortunately. Saturn / Warn makes a quality overdrive setup, but I don't know about getting it to fit to a Cruiser. Someone else may have insight here...

As for the tranny options, I guess a lot of this depends upon the type of on-road and off-road driving you do. If you could fill in the gaps, I can give you my humble opinion.

well , i need to go highway speeds to get to my favorite 4 wheelin spots. Most of them are about 40 to 50 miles away. But at the same time it nees to be a daily driver ( sophomore in high school ).Maybe if i just get a 4 speed but get some different axels. That might help maintain speed for highway.

Ryan, What year is your FJ55? What size tires are you running? What gears do you have in your axles? -- With answers to these questions we might be able to help you find a suitable solution.

However...

If it's a late 60's / early 70's the transmission sides of the Toyota 3-speed and 4-speed bell housings are different, but the bolt patterns on the bell housing are the same. Swap the bell housings and you can swap the transmissions.

A stock '3 speed' t-case will not normally bolt up to a 4 speed transmission because the transmission output shaft spline counts are different. You can address this through gear swaps and/or aftermarket transmission shafts, but I would guess that this may be beyond what you wish to do. If so, you'll need a '4-speed' transfer case too.

Another thing to remember is that the 3 and 4 speed transmission lengths are different. If you do the swap, you should have the drivelines redone as well.

Now, in my humble opinion, I've always believed that you should keep as much of your deep gearing in the t-case as possible. This allows you to get very low gearing when in low range, but be able to achieve highway speeds as well. As set of Marlin gears or a t-case swap may be in your future...

Or, you can look at replacing your overdrive unit with someone elses. But I don't know of anyone that makes an overdirve unit for old Cruisers. If you're stuck on staying with the overdrive, you may need to find a good machine shop and ship them out to have new gears made.
