I am considering purchasing an 88 Raider, haven't seen it yet but owner says engine is shot and needs rebuilt/replaced.  Body and interior are reportedly in 'good' condition.  I'm willing to replace the engine with a remanufactured or rebuilt engine but would like to know what other bad problems these vehicles are notorious for as I don't know much about them.  I'm willing to take a chance on the vehicle as the owner is only asking $300 for it and I've always liked the look of the Raider.  I realize that on an 88 that doesn't run there could be any number of things not working right, but wasn't sure if generally speaking the Raider/montero is known to have a common problem specific to this vehicle.  Thanks.

The '88 Raider wasn't a bad vehicle. The '88 was towards the tail end of the 1st generation of the Raiders, and that generation ended in 1990. It came with some pretty cool features which weren't found in Japanese vehicles of that era, such as a front double wishbone suspension with torsion bar springs, power steering and suspension seats. It's certainly not a hard-core 4-wheel drive like a Jeep of the same vintage, but it's a pretty capable off-road truck/SUV. I would stay away from lifting it though as the double wishbone/ torsion bar setup won't handle it very well.
For $300 you're going to get a pretty good deal.

Oh, there were also 5 different engines you can choose from in that generation, so you have a lot of upgrade options available to you, such as;
- 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gas
- 2.6-litre 4-cylinder gas
- 2.3-litre naturally aspirated diesel
- 2.5 liter turbocharged diesel
- 3.0 liter V6 gas

Thanks Rick.  Any advice on a reputable vendor to purchase an engine?

Try ATK Engines in Texas. They make high performance engines as well as direct replacements for just about everything at reasonable prices. http://www.high-performance-engines.com/ I've used their engines in the past and had lots of luck. If they don't carry the engine for you, the will probably know who might.
