My 2001 tacoma rattles on the passenger side, If I put my hand on the airbag cover it stops. Too bad I can't drive with my hand on the airbag all day. Any suggestions?

I think that is part of a Technical Service Bulletin from Toyota to dealers. TSB# NV006-02 MAY 02 Dash Pad - Rattles Call your local dealer and they should fix it up for you.

The first mechanic that told you that you needed a new engine, did you talk to him and ask him about the stuff I mentioned or was he too stupid to understand?.

Sindey:

It turned out that the timing gear broke a gear, so am glad that I went ahead and got that rebuilt engine installed. I also had a new Crane cam installed. Not a lot of extra power, but enough to make a difference.

You've been trying to get this problem fixed even when you had less than 12,000 mi on the 4runner, right? I think you would have a case.

Some questions: What shaft are they going to replace? What speed does your steering wheel start to shake? Have they used a GSP9700 to balance the wheels? Have they tried swapping the wheels out with another 4runner to isolate the problem? Do you have any time of engine vibration at idle?

Before 12,000 miles I had a vibration problem that the Chicago techs identified and documented. There is still no fix. The steering shake became very noticable around 12,000 miles. They have replaced the steering rack. Today they are replacing the steering shaft and yoke. They have already swapped wheels and tires fromanother 04 4Runner. They have used the GSP9700 to phase and balance the tires. They have aligned it 2 times. There is no noticable vibration at idle, just under acceleration and the shake at speeds over 50 when you hit bridge expansion joints or uneven sections of highway.

If the shake is still there after this fix, I am going to tell them I am tired of them experimenting and look for a different resolution. I think it is a lemon and see how they want to handle it. If there is no progress, then I guess it is time to get my lawyer involved.
