Does anyone out there have a vibration problem felt mainly in the steering wheel? I initially had a shimmy (shaking steering wheel) at freeway speeds but they balanced the wheels and that fixed it.
I still have a vibration though and it's present at just about any speed. Of course last visit to dealer was a "could not duplicate" scenario so now I'm stuck with an annoyance with no apparent fix.
The dealer does have the GSP9700 Force Balancer but that's about all I know. I'm gonna see if I can get them to move the wheels around and balance again but I have to see the Toyota Rep first. It might be another cause altogether but if I can't get them to acknowledge an abnormality, I'm stuck.
Wheels are the 17" alloys with Michelin Cross Terrains. Had 35psi in them and tried 32 with no difference. Also, I've slipped the gear into neutral when driving and the vibration doesn't change.
I just can't figure it out but I'm thinking either they didn't do it perfectly the 1st time (based on what I've read, perfection is a requirement in this area for 4runners), or I've got a tire defect somewhere.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

George, I also have the vibration in my 03 Limited. I have had it back in the shop several times. They even brought in a tech expert with test equipment who was able to document the vibration. They continue to ay there is no know fix. At about 12,000 miles, I developed a very bad shake in the steering wheel. They used the special wheel balancing equipment and were not able to correct it. The regional rep will be in town in a couple ofwweks and he is bringing his new 4Runner. They are going to switch his wheels and tires to my vehicle to see if it resolves the shake. If so, they said we will have to look at new tires.
I think these are two different problems. I have seen others with both problems. I think the vibration must be a design problem that I don't think wil be resolved in existing vehicles.
Someone on this board claimed his problsm was resolved when Toyota replaced his vehicle. A couple of us have tried to contact him with no luck. We wanted to understand his situation and how he was able to get that resolution. It is frustrating to have this condition is such an expensive vehicle. Waht woories me more is the fact that I like to keep a vehicle for many years. Vibrations in vehicles cause components to wear out faster that normal. I am afraid to keep this vehicle too long and I also am concerned about the residual value if this problem becomes known by auto dealers.
I will reort what happens on the 21st.
Dave

| What worries me is the fact that it's noticeable and irritating to me but not the tech. If it were pronounced or severe, they can't reason out of the defect. I'm suspecting a tire or tires are out of round, even if just a tad. I love this 4runner but I won't be able to enjoy it as long as this gremlin keeps nagging me. |

My 98 T100 has the same problem exactly. I think I have narrowed it down to a bad idler arm. I will know for sure this weekend. Hope this helps. |

Al,
Mine has the V8. After another day in the shop, the next step is a new steering rack. The vibration I receive normally is not even of interest to the Toyota folks. They are trying to resolve the shaking of the steering wheel. I have read that others that had this problem had it solved with new tires and a good balance. My mechanic thinks it needs a new steering rack. The Toyota techs in CA agreed with the diagnosis. I think they really don't have any idea and are willing to experiment since they are struggling to figure the shake out. I guess I will have to wait for the new rack to see if it helps. They adjusted the current rack and now the shake is as bad as it has ever been.

Put an aftermarket set of wheels on for experimentation (16" MBmotoring Crawler rims with 265/70R16 Yokohama H/T tires. What a nightmare! poor ride, shakes, wobbles, terrible braking, etc. Experiment was a failure because wheels were so bad, I couldn't tell whether original vibration was gone or not. By the way, they used the GSP9700 on these wheels before install and said they were balanced right. Returned them and got a refund. I've got my 17" Toyota wheels back on with the Michelin Cross Terrains. Now I realize how good these tires are.
Something interesting though: Steering wheel is a tad cocked now, which was the case about a month ago when wheels were rotated. This tells me the wheels are not uniform. |

Just got back from a 150 mile road trip with my '04 Sport Edition. The steering wheel shake is consistantly starts at 62 mph and lasts until around 67 mph. It is certianly not bad, but kind of annoying and definately not right. I have read on other boards that some people changed their tires and the problem was corrected. How many people here have changed their tires?
As far as the Brake click, I think that might be more a more annoying problem for me then the steering wheel shake. Like someone else said, it happens about every 3-4 times I hit the brakes. It will even happen if I am crawling at a few mph and have my foot slightly on the brake. I really hate to have the dealer tearing apart my new truck!! Any similar experiences out there?

Hi Joe. I too had the same issues as you and many others. After numerous times at the dealer, I decided to replace the Dunflops as I call them with Bridgestone Duelers A/T Revos. They must be Road Forced Balanced using a Flange Adapter due to the wheels being LUG CENTRIC, not your more conventional Hub Centric. I found a dealer who knew what I meant and did what I asked and have had ZERO problems regarding vibration :)
I too had a pulsation as I call it while applying the brakes at stop and go speeds. But it just went away on its own in a short period of time. Maybe give it some time and see if it corrects itself. But definatley let the dealer know of this issue so it's documented for future reference. Check out these sites. Alot of good info and help. www.yotatech.com and http://www.gadgetonline.com/vibration.htm Hope this helps. :) |

Hulk / Anyone who replaced Tires -
The Dunlops that you replaced, did you actually take your truck to a separate Dunlop dealer or did the Toyota Dealership help you with the issue? My problem has been that both the dealerships that I've taken my truck to have asked me to take the truck to a Dunlop retailer and get it tested. They've indicated numerous times that it's not their problem since the tires are under Dunlop warranty.
The Regional Rep that I'm calling about these issues doesn't return my calls either. I'm in the East Coast; VA/MD area. Have you guys been having problems with the dealers dismissing your complaints?
I'll look into the http://www.gadgetonline.com/vibration.htm.
Thanks,
Abi
