Howdy
Need to get a new torque converter (for Chevy trucks 350 & 454 engines). Biggest problem seems to be defining what stall speed would be best. The descriptions I have found on the web are not that clear and usually say to talk to the parts dealer.
I am looking for something that will give me economy versus jackrabbit starts.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look?
Thanks

Don't take this quesiton the wrong way, but what's wrong with the stock converter?
For the most part, stock torque converters offer the best combination of economy with a fair amount of 'engagement' strength.
Otherwise, your best bet would be to get a heavy-deuty 'RV' type stall converter that will take heavy loads.
Most speed shops can point you in the right direction.

One must remember that as you increase stall speed to gain more low end you also increase tranny fluid temps with higher stall converters. It will also lower town MPG because more time will be spent on stall in town. RV converters usually have lower stall speed and bigger impellers for improve efficency and reduced heating of fluid and higher power input levels. If he is lacking power because of big tires and tall gears the money would be better spent on a deeper set of gears. |
