okay so i got this truck and it was running just fine then suddenly i switch over to the other tank and the truck dies off on me! i changed the switch on the dash and nothing so far, i then check what i think to be the relay and i believe it wasnt getting power to any of the three wires that need power. it got freezing cold being as how i'am in alaska working outside in the below 40degree weather (i just noticed there is no degree sign on the keyboard...there should be!!) but anyways i was hoping for a bit of wiring knowledge perhaps a diagram for the fuel system for a dual tank and maybe some common info if anyone else has had a situation like this....i appreciate it very much!!

I'll see if I can dig up a diagram for you to look at, but when you flip the switch (key to run position, but engine NOT running), can you hear both the relay and the fuel transfer switch?

Also, ever notice that there isn't a cent key on the keyboard? Sure - the manufacturers give you a $, but no cent sign. What the heck?!?

Hey chev4ever, I am in Alaska too...Anchorage as a matter of fact! I have had about 14 of the 73 to 87 series Chevys. Currently I have an 86 an 84 and an 83. I have had that problem before too. Once it was disconnected on one side from a previous owner. Another time the solenoid that switches the tank went out, and for some reason stopped the flow. And I know this sounds funny, but is there gas in the tank? And the fuel pump should have two inputs and a single outputs, if not then maybe some one decided to go with just one inlet pump. When I checked prices about 3 years ago on that, for some reason the 2 input was like 40 dollars more. So maybe some one didnt have the cash or didnt care. Also there are fuses for that. I am not sure if you have an electric fuel pump or a standard one, since it is an 87. They started the new motor that year.

Over 30 years ago I had a 72 3/4 ton GMC 4x4 with factory dual tanks and it had a manual valve on cab floor by door next to seat and a switch for gauge and only one fuel pump inlet. Given the cold climate I would give some thought to a manual switch over valve conversion for reliability. Simply and very reliable. Sometimes I wish I had put that truck in storage for 20 years and later restored it as I sold it in 1983.

so yeah its a throttle body injected meaning theyre electric pumps..... webby4X4 what should i begin to troubleshoot if i cant here the relay or the switch?? it was kinda loud and cold where i was working and yeah it might take two people to turn the key and the other listen for the clicks...if i dont have any kind of a clicking noise where do i go from there? yeah i heard that 87 was the first year for efi so it came optional instead of standard on most vehichles...i'am not sure where to locate all the fuses that were made for the fuell system, i checked under the dash where they normally are but they all looked fine.....

I have a factory service manual for a 89 that covers Burbs, Blazers and old style cab and chassis trucks (not 88 on P/U body style)

I dug around and couldn't find anything either.

Can you pick up a Haynes manual (or Clymer, etc.) and get the diagram from that perhaps?

I have a 1987 GMC pickup truck with dual tanks, everything worked fine till one day I switched to my left tank. The engine shut down, would not start.. when I switched tanks it blew the ECM fuse. turned out the fuel pump was bad causing the ECM fuse to blow.
