I've heard the same thing. That isn't an uncommon conversion, so you should be able to find several people that have done that before.
Another common conversion for those older Vitara's is to change over to a Diesel Toyota engine. There are a few comapnies that make transmission conversion kits for the Vitara. I don't know of any off-shore companies though, so you'll probably have to do a bit of research on it.
